How to Customize Faux Fur Color, Pile Height and Hand Feel

Material selection determines how a faux fur garment looks, feels and performs. A clear material standard gives designers, merchandisers and production teams a shared reference before sampling begins.

Start With the End Use

A short fashion jacket, long coat, vest, accessory and outdoor style do not require the same material balance. Define the intended silhouette, season, target weight and price position before comparing swatches.

Pile Height and Density

Pile height affects the visual volume and direction of the surface. Density influences coverage, warmth and perceived quality. These two specifications should be reviewed together because a longer pile does not automatically create a fuller appearance.

Hand Feel and Recovery

Evaluate softness by touching the material in multiple directions and checking how quickly the surface returns after pressure. Buyers should also review shedding tendency, static behavior and the appearance after brushing or handling.

Color Development

Provide a recognized color standard or approved physical reference whenever possible. Review lab dips under agreed lighting conditions. For multi-tone effects, tipped yarns or gradient finishes, assess a larger sample because small swatches may not show the overall distribution.

Backing and Garment Construction

The backing influences drape, stretch and sewing behavior. The chosen construction should work with the garment pattern, seam type, lining and intended fit. Material decisions made without considering construction can create avoidable sample revisions.

Build an Approval Standard

Keep one approved swatch together with the approved garment sample and written specifications. The standard should identify color, pile direction, weight, hand feel and any acceptable tolerance so that bulk inspection has a clear benchmark.

Questions Buyers Should Ask

  • Is the material available from stock or developed to order?
  • What quantity is required for custom color or finish?
  • How will bulk color consistency be controlled?
  • Which tests or inspection points apply to the target market?
  • How should the material be packed and stored before cutting?

Early agreement on these points improves quotation accuracy and helps sampling move toward bulk approval with fewer surprises.
